I design suncatchers, and the other day I heard a story that made me grin all morning. A customer told me she bought one for her sister, who’d been stuck in a long, gray winter mood. When the package arrived, her sister said the first thing she noticed was the smell when she opened it – clean paper, a little tape, and that “new thing” scent that feels like a fresh start. She held the suncatcher up to the window, and it caught the light right away, glowing like a tiny piece of morning sun.
Then the customer said the best part was what happened next. Her sister didn’t just hang it up and move on – she kept checking it like it was a little weather report for her mood. The next day, she made tea, and while the kettle hissed and the air smelled like honey and lemon, she stood by the window and watched it shine. Later she texted, “This is weird, but it makes the room feel calmer.” And honestly, that’s why I love making these – they’re small, simple, and they still manage to brighten a day without trying too hard.

I love to make gifts for busy people, and the other day I heard a story about a nurse practitioner that made me smile. Her friend ordered her a mug for the clinic, the kind that feels sturdy in your hands. When she opened the box, it smelled like fresh cardboard and clean paper, like a brand-new notebook. The note was simple: “For the days you don’t even get a lunch break.” She laughed, filled it up, and took that first sip like it was permission to breathe.
Later, her friend told me the mug became her tiny support system. On hard days, she’d wrap both hands around it between patients and let the warmth sink in for a second. On good days, it sat on the counter like a quiet little trophy. Then one morning a coworker said, “I love that mug,” and she replied, “It was a gift. It reminds me I’m not doing this alone.” That’s why mugs work so well for nurse practitioners – they’re practical, they show up every day, and they say “I see you” without making a big scene.

As a Gen X designer, I catch myself smiling at how different the world feels now, and how the same it can be, too. I grew up in the “figure it out” era, where you kept your head down, made a plan, and tried not to complain. So when I sit down to make designs for Millennials and Gen Z, I’m not trying to lecture anybody or act like I “get it” better. I’m trying to listen. Life today hits different. The bills are louder, the news is heavier, and the pressure to be “on” all the time is real. And honestly, I respect how younger folks name what’s happening out loud. They’ll say “I’m burned out,” “I need a boundary,” or “I’m not okay today,” and instead of hiding it, they build little lifelines around it – group chats, therapy, funny memes, and small comforts that make the day feel less sharp.
So my designs end up being a mix of my Gen X wiring and their everyday reality. I still love clean, bold words that get to the point. But now I’m making space for softer honesty, too. A mug that says “One More Email and I’m Moving to the Woods” isn’t just a joke – it’s a pressure valve. A shirt that says “Tired but Trying” isn’t lazy – it’s real. And when I design for them, I’m not trying to “fit in” with their vibe. I’m trying to offer a little backup in a world that doesn’t give enough of it. Something you can wear or hold that quietly says, “Yep, this is hard,” and also, “You’re still here. Keep going.”
