If you grew up drinking water from a green garden hose and coming home only when the streetlights came on, you’re my people!
As a designer, I don’t just make shirts; I make “uniforms” for the generation that survived the 70s and 80s without a GPS or a cell phone. Being a Gen X designer means knowing that sarcasm is our second language and comfort is our top priority.
It is funny how a “badge of honor” for one person can feel like a “dig” to another. While we see these shirts as a fun way to celebrate our childhood, younger people sometimes read between the lines differently.
Here are three reasons why those words might come across as “mean” to the younger crowd:
- It sounds like a “toughness” competition: When we brag about surviving without GPS or cell phones, younger people often feel like we are calling them “soft” or “weak” for using the tools they were born with.
- Sarcasm can feel like “meanness” disguised as a joke: Younger generations often value being “vulnerable” and direct, so they might see our “second language” of sarcasm as a way to be rude or emotionally cold without taking responsibility for it.
- It creates an “Us vs. Them” wall: Using the word “uniform” for just one generation can make it feel like we are starting a club that they aren’t invited to, which can come off as “exclusionary” or judgmental.

“The Secret to a Great “Vintage” Shirt”
Most people think a “vintage” shirt is just a faded logo. There is actually more to it! Here are two things you might not know about the shirts I design:
- The “Garment Dye” Secret: Ever wonder why some new shirts feel stiff while others feel like you’ve owned them for 20 years? I look for “garment-dyed” fabrics. This means the shirt is dyed after it’s sewn. It makes the colors look soft and prevents the shirt from shrinking in your dryer. ( Comfort Colors Shirts )
- Distressed Printing: To get that retro look, I use a “distressed” filter on the art. This puts tiny digital holes in the design so the ink doesn’t feel like a heavy plastic sheet on your chest. It lets the fabric breathe!

Designs That Actually Mean Something
Looking at the latest collection, these aren’t just random words. They are our life stories:
- The “Hose Water” Badge: This is a secret handshake for Gen X. It reminds us of a time when we were independent and tough.
- The “Classic Year” Series: Whether it’s 1966 or 1969, these designs use “varsity” fonts. It’s a nod to the gym clothes we actually wore in high school—but way more comfortable.
- The “Rolling Eyes” Motto: We’ve been skeptical since the day we were born. It’s not being mean; it’s being Gen X.

Let’s Talk About “Gen Z” Trends (Wait… What?)
I see some shirt trends today that make me tilt my head like a confused puppy. Have you seen the shirts that just say “I HAVE RABIES” or “I AM A CRANKY FISH”?
Gen Z calls this “absurdist humor” or “irony.” To them, the less sense it makes, the funnier it is. While Gen X loves a good joke, we usually like our jokes to have a point! We prefer sarcasm based on reality, not just random words pulled out of a hat. You won’t find any “rabies” shirts here -just shirts that celebrate the fact that we survived the 80s in one piece.
Why Work With a Gen X Designer?
You deserve a shirt that fits your life. You want something that:
- Fits right (no tiny “baby tees” here).
- Feels soft (because our skin is over the scratchy stuff).
- Says something (because we still have plenty to say!).
